GEAR AND EQUIPMENT SWAPS - BANFF AND CALGARY

A couple of events you may be interested in checking out to buy or sell skating equipment or clothing:

  1. Town of Banff Community Gear Swap - Sunday, September 10, from 10:00am – 3:00pm, at the Fenlands Recreation Centre.

The Banff Skating Club will have a table at the swap. Those wishing to sell used goods at the swap must deliver them to the BSC table at the Fenlands between 8:30-9:30am on Sunday Sept 10th.  Items need to be good quality and skating specific. Label with your name, your price and an email to send an ETF to. We will not collect cash.

  2. Calalta Figure Skating Club is hosting a Used Skate and Dress Sale - Saturday September 16, from 10:00am - 6:00pm at Jimmie Condon Arena in Calgary. It's a great place to pick up quality figure skating dresses and equipment as Calalta is a large club with many skaters at all levels.

If you have gently used items that you wish to sell at this event they need to be dropped off at Calalta by September 8. Used Skate and Dress Sale Flyer

CASINO - SIGN UP FOR YOUR SHIFT NOW

Mark your calendars now - Wednesday, August 23 and Thursday, August 24, 2023 are our next casino dates!

There are 36 positions to fill and 31 skaters registered in 2022-23 Pre-STAR, STAR and Podium Pathway programs.  Needless to say, we are serious when we say that every skater is responsible for working at least one shift.

If you cannot work the shift yourself, you are responsible for finding an adult to work it for you. I hope you recall agreeing to the "Casino Volunteer Commitment" policy when you registered this year.

If you have never volunteered to work a casino, do not stress, Val Laferriere (your Casino Coordinator) will find the right job for you. To sign-up for a shift or get an answer to a question about the casino, email Val - Casino Coordinator

  • Day Shift (11:00am - 7:30pm)
  • Evening Shift (7:00pm - 3:30am)
  • Count Room Shift (11:00pm - 3:30am)

Info on the casino and jobs

Supports for Volunteers:

·       If you live outside the greater Calgary area there are a couple of things the Club can do to assist member families. In the past, once the final schedule has been circulated, our volunteer families have gotten together to arrange carpooling where possible. The carpool driver may claim a $50 reimbursement for gas at the close of the casino.

·       In addition, those working the night shift or count room, are eligible for that night's hotel accommodation. The club will be block booking and paying for rooms as needed. Please advise the Casino Coordinator (Val) if you require a hotel room and you will be given booking instructions.

CANSKATE COACH TRAINING

Recently, the CSC Board Meeting passed the following motion and we wanted to make sure you were aware of it as you may be interested in applying and pursuing coaching certification:

"To present to up to two Canmore Skating Club (CSC) skaters* who were registered in at least one full CSC STAR/Comp program during the 2022-23 Fall/Winter season - $350 each, to assist them with the registration fee and travel expenses associated with attending a 2023 Skate Canada CanSkate Coach course.  In addition to meeting the course requirements, applicants must have volunteered for at least two CanSkate seasons (e.g. Fall and Winter) as a CSC Program Assistant and provide a letter of recommendation from a CSC Coach. In return for this assistance, the recipients shall volunteer as a coach for 12 CanSkate classes during the 2023-24 skating season.

To apply, skaters must submit the receipt from their course registration along with the letter of recommendation from a coach. Recipients will be determined by the CSC Board of Directors as applications are received and all decisions are final."

The next course in Calgary is June 23-25, 2023 and registration opens May 10, 2023. Courses fill quickly.

Course information and additional dates and locations can be found at:  https://skateabnwtnun.ca/coaches/nccp-coach-courses/canskate-coach-courses/ or by contacting Colleen Yavis at the AB|NT|NU Section office.
