Skater On and Off Ice Etiquette & Behaviour Best Practices

 

Preparation

  • Wait for a Coach or Board Member to be rink-side before stepping on ice.
  • Wear proper attire. Hoodies and bulky clothing are not safe.
  • Tie back hair. Hair ties & gloves available on trolley if needed.
  • Use shelving in the club room; keep bags tidy. No food in club room.
  • No Gum Chewing, snacks or take out drinks permitted. Leave food in your assigned Dressing Room.
  • Non-Glass water bottles only.

During Sessions

  • Join 5-min warmup on STAR/PP sessions (started Spring 2025).
  • Sign in if you are a drop-in.
  • Don’t leave session early without telling a coach.
  • Be respectful & follow instructions from coaches/board members.

Music Station

  • Sign up on whiteboard to play music. Take turns.
  • Handle club iPad with care.
  • Help each other but don’t loiter at music station.

General Courtesy

  • Don’t interrupt lessons – wait nearby respectfully unless it’s urgent.
  • Wear a colored band when your music is playing.
  • Support younger or newer skaters kindly and patiently.

On the ice

  • Spins = center ice | Jumps = ends/corners (alternate left/right).
  • Watch for skaters in lessons – they have right of way.
  • Call out “Heads up” or “Excuse me” if needed – kindly.
  • Fall? Get up quickly. Notify a coach if someone seems hurt.

Avoid These:

  • Over-socializing at boards.
  • Earbuds (strongly discouraged – if needed, use only one ear.
  • Quickly analyze on ice patterns with your head down (stay alert!).

Phones & Privacy

  • Limit phone use. Respect others’ privacy – don’t post without permission.

Dressing Room Conduct

  • Be inclusive, respectful, and kind to all ages.
  • No gossiping or cliques.
  • Leave it clean – No vandalism.
  • No filming/photos without consent.
  • Use hooks, shelving, garbage bins, showers and other bathroom fixtures only for their intended purpose.
  • Report accidents or damage.

Emotions & Frustration

  • Frustrated? Don’t lash out. No stomping, shouting, spitting, or throwing.
  • Coaches will support emotional management and redirect energy positively.
